Jazz and Pop Performance

The music department is equipped with a number of practice rooms, a large rehearsal room and store cupboard

A selection of instruments are available for students to borrow, including a Yanagisawa baritone saxophone, Buffet bass clarinet and marimba.

Music students will get the chance to play in the Student Union jazz orchestra "SUJO", who do several gigs per year including a week at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Some of the music department bands (eg Buster Groove and Soul Principles) regularly do gigs around the area where there is a thriving live music and club scene

Improvisation can be an important part of jazz and pop performance. There are course modules in jazz theory and improvisation/arranging. Individual teachers are also experienced improvisors and are able to instruct in this field.
