Pete Thomas worked part time at the Music Department of University of Southampton from 1999 to 2004. During that time he designed the new recording studios and developed the Commercial Composition undergraduate course, Jazz Techniques, Jazz Theory and Studio Techniques and designed a complete new syllabus for studio, commercial and applied composition. All of this was undertaken while he was on a 0.5
contract with the Music Department of the university. His research contributed to the 5* awarded to the Music Department in the 2001 RAE.
In October 2003, Mr P Thomas submitted a Grievance to the University. Following mutual and amicable discussions, and an apology from the University, Mr Thomas has accepted that apology and settled his Grievance but has decided to return to his work as a composer full-time from 19 March 2004.

NB A Grievance
would normally need to be submitted to the University before any formal legal action might take place. In this case Mr Pete Thomas was happy to take no further action following the University’s satisfactory settling of the matter.
Professor Nick Cook resigned his post in music at Southampton in September 2003
I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. . . . who is more devoted to 'order' than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice. . . . Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will.
