Commercial composition course uk

Commercial Composition Course

This year 3 course was originally designed by TV/film composer Pete Thomas, graduate of Leeds College of Music Jazz Course in 1996, and is probably the most innovative composition course available at any UK university music department or music college. From 1999 it was included as part of the undergraduate Music (BA) course at the University of Southampton, where degree students had the chance to study all types of commercial and professional composition. This includes many different styles of popular and art music such as jazz improvisation, folk, dance, swing, big band, reggae, ska, country, hip hop, garage, trance, ambient and sound design as well as all styles of music for television, film soundtrack and theatre music. This can include musicals, documentary, comedy, drama and advertising. In fact any genre of music, whether it is for a performing artist, music to picture, music for dance and club or for the concert hall. The course gives students the necessary grounding to enter the music industry as a professional composer, or to continue studies at postgraduate level, either masters or PhD/MPhil. Pete has now left Southampton to concentrate full time on his professional work. Please note that this is site is not affiliated with the University of Southampton.

Courses at Southampton are also available in contemporary classical composition. These are taught by the eminent composers Michael Zev Gordon and Michael Finnissy. This subject is taught at undergraduate (BA) and postgraduate (MA, PhD and MPhil) level.

Studio Courses

2nd and 3rd year students can get onto the highly popular studio courses. The Music Department is equipped with recording studios, live recording room and a multimedia studio. These are based around Emagic Logic software and are ideal for the modern composer of any style from classical to pop music production. There are facilities in the multimedia studio to digitise video for use in web authoring and publishing software Opus or for importing to Logic for composing to picture.

Performance

Performance and improvisation play a very large role in the undergraduate programme at the University of Southampton. Students are encouraged to join the University jazz orchestra. As well as the Jazz & Pop Performance units, there is now a year 3 module, jazz and Pop Performance Ensemble, that is specifically designed to allow a composer to hear their music as a performance.
